“Today is a day of mourning for the children of Chicago. Their education has been hijacked by an unrepresentative, unelected corporate school board, acting at the behest of a mayor who has no vision for improving the education of our children. Closing schools is not an education plan. It is a scorched earth policy. Evidence shows that the underutilization crisis has been manufactured. Their own evidence also shows the school district will not garner any significant savings from closing these schools.

This is bad governance. CPS has consistently undermined school communities and sabotaged teachers and parents. Their actions have had a horrible domino effect. More than 40,000 students will lose at least three to six months of learning because of the Board’s actions. Because many of them will now have to travel into new neighborhoods to continue their schooling, some will be victims of bullying, physical assault and other forms of violence. Board members are wishing for a world that does not exist and have ignored the reality of the world we live in today. Who on the Board will be held responsible? Who at City Hall will be held responsible?”

- Chicago Teachers Union president Karen Lewis commenting on today’s news that the Board of Education has voted to close 50 Chicago public schools.

While only around 40 percent of children in Chicago are black are Latino, 90 percent of children whose schools will be shuttered are black or Latino.

Trigger Warning- Police violence: My friends were arrested at gunpoint for dumpster diving on Agnes Scott campus. This is their account of what happened. The administration has yet to take action. We demand that Agnes Scott:
    •    Drop any charges against the dumpster divers, and remove any trespass orders against them. They did nothing wrong, and have already been put through too much.
    •    Fire Officer Antinozzi. His behavior does not contribute to a safe and peaceful campus, and is not in keeping with the university’s philosophy.
    •    Publish a memorandum clarifying its policies on use of force, and how the university intends to prevent this sort of mistreatment in the future.
    •    Publish the regulations surrounding how the college deals with complaints against a police officer, to ensure transparency and accountability in the police department.

I know these people and they’ve been terribly, terribly wronged. Please watch the video and read the above message.

This officer seriously seems to be the type to get his rocks off by bullying people.

My friend (let’s call her Z), a recent alumna, came to visit me and a few other people in Avery Glen over the summer. When she texted us that she was on her way, we told her that we thought the gate was broken again, but if she needed us to key her in, she should let us know. When she got here, the gate was open, so she decided to just drive in and meet us at our apartment.

As she crossed the threshold, something triggered the gate and it closed as she drove past, scratching up the side of her car. When she went to file a report with Avery Glen’s Leasing Office and ASC Police about the incident, Lt. Antinozzi pulled her aside, bullied her through the interview-turned-interrogation, accused her of trespassing, and refused to listen to her side of the story, claiming something about how the security tapes showed that she tried to drive into Avery behind someone, which is why her car got scratched up.

Despite her protests and requests to see said tapes, he banned her from Avery Glen and from campus, with the campus ban only being overturned by quick intercession by the administration, who could vouch for her character.

When I spoke to Z about the situation, she kept saying how Antinozzi kept treating her like a criminal, even though all she had done was drive into Avery to visit friends when the damn gate was broken. Z was an outstanding campus leader, president of clubs, member of Mortar Board, a dedicated student worker, and continues in her success as a graduate student now. But even if she wasn’t all those things, there was no reason for him to treat her the way he did.

This guy swaggers around campus like he owns it, but I don’t think that he really knows or cares to associate with the students here. I’m not sure why he’s working here and giving the ASC PD a bad name, when there are plenty of courteous and kind officers on patrol there too.

Please, someone get in touch with Chief Hope to get this sorted out. I’m tired of seeing him around and hearing all of these stories about how he’s abusing his power and being an enormous bully.

Yes this^
It’s actually a really good way to see vividly some different forms of marginalization because the insularity of the community doesn’t force the authors to hide such things. And also lends those few that defy this a bit more credibility despite their privilege.
Also telling is the outcry when someone, like Jemison for example, does write a story for and by marginalized populations and the majority has the gall to be offended that they were ‘left out’.
